It was either a 6.5 or a 6.8 (pretty sure it was 6.5) I went through in 1991 in the Philippines. I was riding with a guy and at first I thought something had gone wrong with his tire. That was the biggest one I'd ever felt. It happened just a month or so before Mount Pinatubo blew its stack.
Mount Pinatubo was a fun one. The Smart People© decided it was going to blow up and spew crap all over Clark Air Base. So they evacuated everybody to Subic NAS on the other side of the mountain. Then when it blew it hit Subic first. When it really cut loose it did do some major damage to Clark. So much so that we abandoned it completely. (Part of the reason was damage, but a bigger reason was the Filipinos wanted a whole lot more money to keep it there than we were willing to pay. Volcano damage was a convenient excuse to walk away completely.)
Anyway, I got a front row center view of the volcano blowing while a typhoon whipped stuff everywhere, lightning flashing at the volcano, etc. It was scary but beautiful. I was sitting outside in a car where I planned to sleep, wondering if I was gong to wake up dead in the morning. (At this stage in life, I'm pretty sure I didn't.)
