What is a "central vac"? Does it just suck air in or what?

Re: I hate dusting!
There usually are two kinds of central vacs methods available. Both use holes in room walls put there with pipes installed during original construction of the building. One kind vents directly to the outside like a clothes dryer. The other kind pipes debris to a canister in a basement or closet which the homeowner must empty when filled. This kind usually has a filter on it which also must be changed periodically. Both require the use of a special vac cleaner with a long hose with a fitting on it to connect to the hole in the wall. The dust & dirt then exhaust into the pipe in the wall instead of into a canister on the vac cleaner itself. That way the user doesn't have to empty a canister as frequently & the vac cleaner does not have the weight of a canister collecting the dust but the long hose & long electric cord can be cumbersome in moving the cleaner around obstacles like furniture.
My late husband had severe COPD and any dust presented a problem for his breathing. The best solution I've found for dust, (in addition to using Filtrete 1700 filters in my heat pump intake), had been also using large sized Honeywell air cleaners that used charcoal foam filters that wrapped around the inside of the unit. I had 3 of those air cleaners running 24 hours a day in an approximate 1200 sq ft of space that he could utilize in comfort. Each was rated to clean 500 sq ft. I was amazed at the amount of dust that accumulated in those filters. I had no dust problem while those machines were running and when he passed away & I turned them off in an effort to lower my power bill - dust then became a problem. For me it has been a choice of higher power bills or more manual labor in cleaning up the dust. The air cleaner machines do excellent jobs if one can afford higher power bills.
